Enjoy Pool Time While Protecting Your Skin

Protecting Your Skin When Playing in the Water
Swimming is one of the best and most fun ways to stay active and cool outdoors.

For adults and children alike, we can all benefit from swimming during the summer. It helps us stay active without sweating, and keeps us cool under that burning sun. However, what most of us overlook is the importance of wearing sunscreen correctly when we, or our kids, are jumping in and out of the water. So, how do we safely protect our skin from the sun when we’re repeatedly diving into the pool or waves? Here are our top tips for swimming outside, and staying safe.

  1. Apply Before Going Out
You’ll want to apply that sunscreen BEFORE you leave the house, not after. The best habit is applying sunscreen at least 15 minutes before you’re going to be exposed to that strong sun. If you’re planning a day at the beach or by the pool, you’ll definitely need to give that sunscreen the opportunity to settle on the skin’s surface.

  2. Sunscreen is NOT Waterproof
Even when they claim to be waterproof, no sunscreen actually is. Water-resistant sunscreen just means it won't rinse off as quickly as your standard sunscreen. Water resistant sunscreen will last up to 80 minutes, do keep that in mind please. We need to make sure, before and after we jump in the water to cover all exposed parts from the sun. The sun’s UV rays can penetrate through water, so even when we’re submerged we are still not protected.

  3. Always Reapply
We can’t stress it enough how important it is to reapply when we’re out with our families or friends under the sun for hours on end. We love the summer, and we love the heat, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t very strict about protecting our skin. Apply sunscreen every two hours, however when you’re swimming or sweating you need to apply more frequently. Same goes for our Playpit Natural Deodorant. Whether your child is using our kid’s natural deodorant, or you’re using our safe and natural adult’s deodorant, you’ll know when it’s time to reapply. Same goes for that sunscreen.

  4. Beware of Mid-Day Sun
The sun is strongest at mid-day, and it’s best to protect yourself from the sun from 10am-4pm. However, that 12pm sun is really when its rays are the most fierce. When possible we do recommend sitting under the umbrella, using sunhats and protecting your skin, no matter how beautifully dark you may naturally be. This is especially important when we’re on the beach or near the water when the sun reflects off the sand and water.

Stay safe! Protect your skin and teach your children from a very young age the importance of sunscreen and finding shade when possible. We want you and your children to stay beautiful and healthy for the years to come!
