Why Switch Your Family to Natural Deodorant

Why Switch Your Family to Natural Deodorant

Let’s get real, smelling delicious is an important and satisfying detail in our personal hygiene. But do we really need all those chemicals and unpronounceable ingredients to achieve that perfect scent? Maybe if we had a better idea of what those chemicals were doing to our bodies, and to our children’s bodies then we wouldn’t even need to think twice about what we buy for them to use on their bodies. Our children are in the process of developing and we must always consider not only their unique personalities, but also their form, cognition, and immune systems as they grow up. So what are the potentially harmful side effects of chemical deodorants, and why won’t we even bother with the risks? Let’s get learning!

Is Deodorant Harmful for Adults and Children Alike?

When we don’t use natural deodorants, our deodorants can have harmful side effects on our health. Chemical deodorants typically use aluminum, parabens, phthalates, polyethylene glycol, propylene glycol, fragrances and other funky, unattractive chemicals.

Here are some examples:

  1. Aluminum- Aluminum works at keeping our underarms dry, and though this may sound like a dreamworld, if we block our sweat ducts in our underarms, then all those toxins our bodies are trying to dispose of, get reabsorbed into the body. Because, well, they have nowhere else to go. Not only that, but your body can also absorb the aluminum, which can cause a whole series of health problems we don’t even want to get into!
  1. Parabens, phthalates, polyethylene glycol and propylene glycol, are all chemicals that we don’t want near our bodies, and we certainly don’t want them near our children’s bodies. They can disrupt our hormones, irritate the skin, and in reality, are ingredients used in our floor cleaners, and have been linked to various long-term health issues. Um… no thank you!

We Can Teach our Children About their Bodies rather than Artificially Covering Them Up

One of our favorite aspects of natural deodorant is that it not only opens up the door for conversation about our bodies, but also creates an awareness of how our bodies work and how we want to treat ourselves. Artificial deodorants work at smothering up our natural processes, encouraging our intelligent bodies to work against its natural systems. Natural deodorants on the other hand, have found a sweet spot, between effectiveness without disrupting our bodies rhythm and rhyme.

When it’s time to start buying deodorant for your son or daughter, then they’re probably ready to absorb some insight. When you buy a natural deodorant, you can teach them how to read labels, explain to them why we sweat and how our bodies change as we develop and grow. We can use this as an opportunity to teach them about what’s safe to put in their bodies and what isn't. This conversation can go well beyond their natural smells, and they can bring this lesson into other aspects of their social, everyday lives.

How amazing is that?

Who would have thought deodorant can lend itself to invaluable life lessons?

Connect, Rather than Disconnect, to the Natural World

We’re not going to get into the ethics of big brand deodorants, because we can only assume what they might be like. What we know for certain is that small, family-made brands like Play Pits have curated deodorants that are safe to use, not only for you and your family, but also for the planet. Who needs all those chemicals anyway? We sure don’t!

When we use natural cosmetics that have natural ingredients, we can get in touch with natural scents, herbs, flowers and fruits we love and enjoy. We can teach our children about these natural ingredients and, who knows? Maybe even develop their interest in the natural world of plants, fruits and herbs. Amazing! Sounds like a win-win situation to us!

Takeaway Thoughts on Natural Deodorant and Keeping our Families Safe and Scented

When we use antiperspirants for years, our bodies become dependent on them. When we switch over, all that bacteria that was being plugged into our underarms, will now have to take its not-so-sweet time to purge from the body. It can take up to 30 days after quitting antiperspirants for your body to find its natural rhythm again. But when we start our children off right, then they won’t even have to go through the whole detox process. We’ll teach them about the importance of understanding how their bodies function and how natural ingredients work harmoniously with our bodies rather than against them.

It’s no wonder why Play Pits has decided it was time to create an effective, yet safe and aromatic deodorant for us adults and our kids!
